LACTATION CONSULTATION

Breastfeeding provides ideal nutrition for an infant. In most cases, a woman’s body is capable of producing all of the nourishment her newborn requires.

While it may be a natural process, breastfeeding requires practice and patience, particularly with a premature infant, or when the mother returns to work. It’s a good idea to seek the advice and help of an expert.

Prenatal educational consultations are recommended.

Debbie recommends these books about breastfeeding:

The Nursing Mother’s Companion, by Kathleen Huggins

Of all the books I’ve read, this classic text for breastfeeding mothers is the one I’ve found most helpful. Not only does it cover the basics, but it breaks th information down into small pieces so you can find answers in the middle of the night without having to wade through a great deal of unrelated material.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, La Leche League

This La Leche handbook is a classic that was one of the first available to mothers so many years ago. Several editions later, the demand for this classic is still strong. It offers practical advice for birth-related questions from the La Leche League’s philosophical perspective.

The Breastfeeding Book, Martha Sears

This handy book, written by Martha Sears (nurse, lactation consultant, and mother of eight), takes you from the first feedings through weaning, and covers everything in between.

The Breastfeeding Café, by Barbara L. Behrmann

This charming book shares the ups and downs of breastfeeding, from mothers who have ‘been there, done that.’ Their helpful hints ring true to life, rather than just something that sounds good to some guy in a lab. The powerful, stories make this a book an educational (and delightfully enjoyable!) read.

The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, by Jack Newman, M.D., and Teresa Pitman

Dr. Jack Newman, a long-time supporter and researcher on breastfeeding, runs Canada’s first breastfeeding clinic. His dedication to mothers and babies is evident in this clear and concise guide.
